About Chamba
Chamba was found by King Sahil Varman in around 1000 AD in memories of his daughter Champawati. Chamba is famous for its temples and culture preserved from ancient times.
Chamba is situated on the bank of river Ravi. The town is surrounded from all sides by mountains making it a fortress.The place is many grasy playgrounds known as chowgan.

Chaugan : Chaugan is the grassy playground and center of all the activities in Chamba. The Chaugan is used a s a place for playing, fair and market.
Laxmi Narayan Temple : This temple built by King Sahil Varman is the main temple of Chamba. Wheel roof, wooden umbrella, and perfect artistic carvings on the temple are something to view. Many other small temples and shrines were built by many succeeding kings of place.
Champawati Temple : Champawati temple was built by the king Sahil Varman in memory of his beloved daughter Champawati. The temple is made in shikhar style and of the same size as Laxmi Narayan temple.
Vajreshwari Temple : Vajreshwari temple is dedicated to goddess of lightening. The temple has magnificent carving on the walls with chattris and sikhar in the architecture.
Sui Mata Temple : Sui Mata temple is built on the elevation of Shah Madar hill. The temple has its steps moving down the steep hill side. At the end of the steps is a small water stream. A story is attached that in the beginning the stream was not flowing due to some supernatural reasons. The king sacrificed his wife queen Sui to please the supernatural powers. In memory of the event the temple was built by the king.
Chamunda Devi Temple : The temple is dedicated to Chamunda devi. According to mythology, Goddess Chamunda, who was born from the eyebrow of goddess Ambika, killed to demons named Chand and Munda.
Hari Rai Temple : The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. A beautiful bronze statue of the god is place inside the temple.
Other Places : Other places to visit in the town are Akhand Chandi Palace- an academic place, Rang Mahal, Bhuri Singh Museum, Church of Scotland and Majar of Sai Jamal Shah.
